Gas prices are at record highs. Finding affordable gas can be a challenge in today’s economy. If you are on the west coast of America, gas is even more expensive than the national average. When I’m looking for cheap gas I often find myself paying more than I expected. For one thing, the gas stations themselves are dishonest. They advertise a fixed gas price in big lettering, but in the fine print it will say “with purchase of car wash”, or in some cases, “cash price”. In the end, there are very few places that will be upfront and honest with you when all they want is your hard-earned money. With that, it is up to you as a consumer to be aware of marketing schemes that are intended to fool you. It is also up to you to save your own gas money.
Here are a few tips on ways to pay less at the pump, and to save wear and tear on your car.
- Car pool if you can, and walk if you’re able. Oftentimes, there are ways in which people can work together to find a common solution. When you ask questions you can get answers, so ask around. Ask a friend if they go your way, or ask a friend of a friend. Getting a ride to work or to an event can be easier than you think when you put effort into it. Yes, you have your own car but if your car is empty then ask if anyone needs a ride. If you want a ride, ask around because you might be surprised to find someone going the same place as you at the same time. Walking is better for your overall health. If you have the time and the ability, choose walking.
- Accelerate slow. Whether you are driving local or long distance, when you drive with your mind on driving it can save you money. Pay attention to how hard you accelerate and remember that slower and easier on the pedal means the more gas you save.
- Anticipate Traffic: Look as far ahead and as far behind as you can while driving. Check your car mirrors and always pay attention to your surroundings. Being more aware on the road allows you to anticipate starting and stopping. When you can anticipate traffic you can determine your own speed. The more steady and consistent you keep the speed of your car the more you save in gas mileage.
- Coast more and brake less: If you know when you are stopping, and if you are not impeding traffic, coast your car to decelerate. In other words, the less you use your gas pedal the less gas your car uses.
- Stay in the speed limits, especially on the highway. You may cut your fuel costs down considerably when you keep your rpms low and your speed at the posted limits.
